If you just got a new truck or are new to towing, you may wonder what small tips and tricks you may need to be as safe as possible, and take full advantage of your truck’s capabilities.
Haus Auto Group is here to help you out with a few towing tips for your truck. Our Canfield dealership is eager to get you going smoothly and safely, so be sure to take note of these tips before hitching your trailer and hitting the road.
Check All of Your Tires
This usually goes without saying, but not only should you check the tires on your truck, but on your trailer as well. While improperly-inflated tires are a safety concern whenever you get behind the wheel, the addition of trailer tires adds more responsibility on your part.
In order to optimize safety and sheer handling capability, you have to make sure that your tires are appropriately inflated. Under-inflated tires can cause more resistance, increased tire temperature and could contribute to a potential blowout.
While your truck may be capable of towing a good amount, you won’t get very far without well-inflated tires on both your truck and trailer.
Check Lights and Brakes
The lights on your truck may seem just fine, but you need to ensure that your trailer lights work properly as well. Though it may seem excessive and unnecessary, your truck’s tail lights might not be fully visible to others from behind the trailer.
Heavier trailers should have a trailer brake system, so unless you have a trailer on the smaller and lighter side, double check the trailer brake system to make sure it works properly.
Consider Tow Mirrors
You should adjust your mirrors in order to see the end of your trailer, but investing in tow mirrors could be a worthwhile idea. If your trailer is wider than your truck, you’ll be prone to blind spots and ultimately unsafe.
Tow mirrors may be a good layer of comfort, especially if your truck does not feature blind spot warning systems.
